The Honduran organized peasant movement, which is a member of La Via Campesina, carried out demonstrations across the country on Thursday, to mark the first anniversary of Porfirio Lobo’s administration, who is considered by the popular movement as a continuation of the coup d’etat perpetrated against president Manuel Zelaya.

The demonstrations included roadblocks in several Honduran departments, as well as demonstrations outside the Supreme Court of Justice demanding measures such as dismissing the justices and issuing a new agrarian law.

Real World Radio interviewed Rafael Alegria, a member of the Latin American Coordination of Rural Organizations (CLOC-Vía Campesina) in Central America, and of the Honduran popular resistance. They made a very negative assessment of Lobo’s administration, since it “caused a huge social, political and economic crisis”.

Alegria explained that Lobo was trying to undo what the person had achieved during Zelaya’s administration, in terms of education and trade unions, by stripping the workers of their basic rights.

He also stripped thousands of family peasants of the right over land.
The leader also said that an antiterror law had been passed that enabled to practice widespread repression. “So we might say that it is a pretty bad assessment of this regime, nothing in favor of the people has been accomplished”.

Meanwhile, the National Front of Popular Resistance will hold a meeting next February 26, where it will be decided whether the popular movement will be an political partisan actor and would run for elections.

“So the country is undergoing important moments of social and political struggle, which we had not had in previous years”, he said.
