Henry Saragih, outgoing general coordinator of La Via Campesina, and the main leader of Serikat Petani Indonesia, a national peasant organization that hosted the Sixth Global Conference of Via Campesina in the capital city of Jakarta, told Real World Radio that the International Operative Secretariat of La Via Campesina International will move from Indonesia to Zimbabwe.

The conference was publicly initiated this Sunday, in the presence of about 1500 people. The political debates will start tomorrow.

"La Via Campesina is an international movement which brings together millions of peasants, small and medium farmers, landless people, indigenous people, migrants and agricultural workers from around the world. It defends small-scale sustainable agriculture as a way of promoting social justice and dignity," reads the website of the peasant network. It brings together 150 member organizations.

About 500 delegates from more than 70 countries of all continents have come to the Sixth Global Conference in Jakarta. In an interview with Real World Radio, Saragih also discussed the movement’s major achievements as well as its new strategies that would be defined during the conference.
