Real World Radio interviewed Friends of the Earth Europe’s Food Campaigner Mute Schimpf about Monsanto’s recent withdrawal from Europe.

Schimpf spoke about Monsanto’s withdrawal of its commercialization and plantation of genetically modified crops in the region, considering the general rejection by European citizens and NGO. She also spoke about France’s decision to lift a ban on GM corn that had been implemented in March of 2012. The country’s excuse is that the moratorium on MON810 GM corn had no legal grounds. The decision sparked demonstrations of rejection by the Green Party in France and by environmental organizations, as well as organic farmers. The activist mentioned that in France certain peasant organizations and companies lobbied for the introduction of GM crops. Even though there are scientific studies that show the dangers of this kind of crops for human health, the problem is that the scientists that criticize GMO are often targeted by these coalitions.

«It’s better to accept the reality that in Europe there is no market for Monsanto’s products to be grown», said Mute Schimpf.
