Claims to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights over impacts of Mexican energy reform on indigenous peoples

Real World Radio interviewed one of the representatives of the human rights organizations that denounced before the IACHR the impacts on indigenous communities of an energy policy passed by Enrique Peña Nieto´s administration.

We are talking about Areli Sandoval Teran, Coordinator of the Citizen Diplomacy Program, DESCA and Social Watch Mexico, who was interviewed by our colleague and collaborator in Mexico, Mónica Montalvo.

The organizations that arrived to the US capital in the framework of the 154th round of IACHR hearings consider that "it is necessary and urgent that an IACHR´s delegation visits Mexico to update the country report and documents the serious human rights violations caused by energy projects.

It is important that the IACHR urges Mexico to carry out free, prior and informed consultations about the implementation of energy projects or regulatory changes according to the highest international standards, they stated.

These organizations include the Miguel Agustin Pro Juarez Human Rights Center (Prodh Center), Fundar-Center for Analysis and Research, Promotion and Defense of Human Rights, AC and Greenpeace, who informed the members of the commission about the serious impacts caused by the energy reform in terms of economic, social and cultural rights in Mexico.

During their intervention, the representatives of said organizations welcomed the openness of the IACHR for this dialogue space that recognizes that energy policies are directly related to the protection of human rights. They highlighted that it is the first time a public space is given to the society to present their thoughts, because neither the National Human Rights or the Supreme Court of Justice have expressed their positions about this issue.
