“Governments can’t sue companies, why should companies be allowed to sue Governments?”

The President of the Board of the Transnational Institute (TNI), and prolific author on global social justice issues, Susan George, denounced on Monday in Geneva the Investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) mechanism, present in the Bilateral Investment Treaties and which allows transnational corporations to sue governments.

The expert denounced that last year there were several tens of lawsuits filed by companies, mainly focused on extractive activities, thanks to this mechanism. She also highlighted the business opportunity this implies for large law firms, that even promote the lawsuits.

George was interviewed by the communications team of the Global Campaign to Dismantle Corporate Power. The interview was held after her participation as expert in a panel during the opening day of the second session of the Intergovernmental Working Group of the UN Human Rights Council, which is setting the bases for a binding treaty on transnational corporations and human rights.
