“Ni una Menos” (Not One Less): huge mobilization in Buenos Aires, Argentina

Download: MP3 (1.6 Mb)

In 2015, a woman died every 36 hours in Argentina. Currently, a woman dies every 26 hours. That´s why thousands of women took to the streets on Saturday in several cities of the country to warn about this serious issue and demand public policies that protect them and put an end to femicides.

“Seeing women from all over the city, carrying the pictures of the victims of femicides, with the faces of these young women, is really shocking and moving. A lot of things go through our bodies as well”, said on Monday, Florencia Flores Iborra, producer at the Graves y Agudas show of Radio Sur FM 88.30 in an interview with Real World Radio. The Uruguayan communicator who has been living in Buenos Aires for years was present at the demonstration. She is also member of Radialistas Feministas and the Ni Una Menos movement, which called for the mobilization on Saturday.

This is the third consecutive year of mobilizations under the “Not One Less” slogan. “We´ve managed to put the issue on the agenda, but far from solving it, more and more women are killed by their partners and are victims of femicides”, regretted Florencia, who also participated in an open radio show outside Congress, where several activities and debates took place. In the afternoon, all of them, together with many men, marched to Plaza de Mayo, where there was a main event. Nora Cortiñas of Madres de Plaza de Mayo was one of the main speakers.

Moreover, Radio Sur FM 88.30 and Florencia in particular provided feminist content, with a gender view, to the app “Vivas nos queremos” (We want us alive), which allowed to georeference audios for mobile devices to listen to radio clips and testimonies of the experiences of women, their demands and struggles in the way to Plaza de Mayo. This was a very innovative initiative. The app can be downloaded here: http://vivanosqueremos.sociales.uba.ar/
