La Via Campesina is calling for a National Movement for Food Sovereignty in the Basque Country. They are producing a documentary with testimonies of European and Latin American farmers.

Real World Radio interviewed David Lopategui about this documentary, that “strengthens the idea of peasants as a global movement” resisting capitalism, while the organization was filming it in Uruguay. “GMOs, FTAs, land grabbing. These are elements that affect the peasant movement regardless of their country, said David, and pointed out that the Basque Country “has been giving their back to the countryside lately”.

In that European region, the agricultural union Ehne, member of La Vía Campesina Europe, has been leading a campaign towards the creation of a National Movement for Food Sovereignty. “This means going back to our roots”, said David.

The first thing we need to do is to inform, and then to raise awareness. And the role of urban sectors in this awareness-raising is key, said David.

The struggle against megaprojects such as highways, high-speed trains and megaports are related to this movement for Food Sovereignty.

The documentary will include footage from the Basque Country, European rural regions, Uruguay, Brazil and Central America. In addition, they are aiming to create a “documentary fund” on Food Sovereignty that includes testimonies, pictures and audiovisual materials around this issue.

David also highlighted that Bizilur has the Zapatista Movement and La Via Campesina International as strategic allies.
