On the 2nd and 3rd of July 2009, a team of the NGO Les Amis de la Terre Togo (ADT-Togo), led by its Executive Director, Mr. Mensah TODZRO encountered Nangbéto communities (Agnigbavo, Tanago, Assante, Okouta, Okouta Lakou), and Adjarala communities (Kossihoé Novissi, Gbondjinhoé, Clikomé, Gahonou, Kossi-Cope, Aglamassoe), in Akparè and those of Bassar in Bassar. In Akparé, discussions were focused on the Nangbéto dam built there twenty years ago and that of Adjarala to be built in the months or years to come.
The main objective of these meetings is to define new directions for activities so that the communities of Adjarala do not suffer any negative impacts on the environment of this project. The fears are justified in terms of projects realised or susceptible to be, as the case of the Agou bauxite exploitation project
In Bassar, were present in the meeting the local leaders of the communities of Baghani, Bangeli, Biakpabé, Bitcahbé, dimora, Kabou , Tchoudoukou and Taouleba. These communities are affected by the exploitation of Bangeli iron by the Company MM Mining following a contract signed with the Togolese government. The purpose of this meeting is to exchange with the communities to cope with the negative impacts of the mining and to make the company execute the project in accordance with the recommendations of the environmental impact assessment.
ADT-Togo and the communities have defined the actions to make the MM Mining take into account their concerns.
