Descargar: MP3 (1.3 MB)

Real World Radio interviewed feminist Miriam Nobre, of the World March of Women (WMW) during an event at the Peoples’ Summit that is taking place in Rio de Janeiro, called « Feminism, Agroecology and Food Sovereignty- Building New Paradigms for Human Life ».

The event was organized by the WMW, La Via Campesina, the Women Working Group of the National Coordination of Agroecology of Brazil and the Andean Coordination of Indigenous Organizations.

In an international situation of multiple crises and false solutions proposed by corporations and governments, Nobre highlighted that feminism should contribute first its ’irreverence’, besides the capacity to perceive that « the current crisis is a crisis of how the system is organized ». She says the model under which people relate to each other is in crisis and « the commodification of their relationship with nature and their bodies needs to be challenged ».

The work of the WMW to identify their main contributions to the crises has meant that women have had to confront corporate and government land grabbing in different countries and the ’rules’ that say women are not farmers.

Nobre highlighted women’s main contribution in selecting seeds and crops and their contribution to preparing and preserving food. She also told us about the new discussions taking place among women about housework, as they believe it is necessary to move forward so that men share that responsibility more. Nobre says the State should also implement policies that will reduce women’s work load.
