The International Meeting of Social, Cultural and Community Organizations, Gestar Ciudad began on Saturday, November 28 in Cali, Colombia. This initiative aims to explore alternatives for a more inclusive and sustainable development of the cities.

During the meeting there are many work agendas, several linked with national and regional urban processes that seek to articulate plans for city development from urban renovation, reconstruction of the civic make-up, promotion of culture, citizen education, participatory planning, territorial reordering, in order to promote socio-cultural transformation dynamics with a strong participation of the urban residents.

The meeting is called as a result of the need to contribute to these processes, from the discussion with local actors and the rest of Latin America, by sharing different ideas and experiences.

The inhabitants of the city find it necessary to rethink the city as a result of the “global city crisis”, which shows a certain loss of collective, cultural and political life.

These are all issues that exceed the main Modern institutions such as the contract, the State, the market, science and education.

These meetings become necessary in order to look for collective alternatives.

The meeting is organized around four themes. The first one is “City, sustainability and environment”, which tries to reflect and propose agendas for a sustainable building of the city.

The second one is “City, Pedagogy and citizen participation”, which has the explicit goal of promoting the participation and commitment of the citizens to their environment.

The third one is called “City, arts and popular expressions”. It deals with the role of art and popular cultures un the building of the city.

And finally, the fourth themes is “Memory, territory and design of the city”, where they seek to share ideas about the role that memory and territory have in the building of a city with a shared view.

The meeting aims to trigger ludic mobilization dynamics, exercises of reflection on experiences, exchange of research work and building of public agendas.
