Tens of Latin American and European social movements and organizations are denouncing the negligence and lack of responsibility by rich countries with reference to the climate crisis. They highlight how transnational corporations interfere to implement false solutions to climate change.

At the International meeting called “From Cancun to Durban and Rio + 20” that took place in Mexico City on June 20-21 and was organized by the Metropolitan University and the Mexican Network of Action against Free Trade, several social groups warned about the fact that rich countries are subjecting the rights of the peoples to the interests of big companies.

Last December, the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP 16) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change took place in Cancun. The COP17 will take place in Durban, South Africa in November, 2011, and the Rio+20 Summit will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in June, 2012.

Some of the groups present at this International event included the Brazilian Network for the Integration of Peoples, Ecologistas en Acción Spain, the Hemispheric Social Alliance, Jubilee South, the Heinrich Böll Foundation, the Trade Union Confederation of the Americas, the Andean Coordination of Indigenous Organizations, the National Confederation of Peasant, Indigenous and Black Organizations of Ecuador – Via Campesina Ecuador and the Transnational Institute from the Netherlands.

In addition, Mexican organizations such as Otros Mundos – Friends of the Earth Mexico, the Council of Communities Opposing La Parota Dam, the Mexican Network of People Affected by Mining and the Zapatista Indigenous Agrarian Movement, also participated in the event.
