Under free trade the environment does not matter, because what matters is how much profits you get, if you can get them by investing little money, it does not matter whether your industry is extremely dirty, if it displaces local communities or ruins an entire forest.

This is the explanation of the link between climate and trade of Focus on the Global South’s Mary Lou Malig.

She told Real World Radio that free trade has definitely contributed to speeding up the climate crisis.

Focus on the Global South is a non governmental organization based in Thailand, with offices in Philippines and India.

The organization does research, advisory and capacity building in grassroots organizations.

It aims to have critical analysis and promote debates on national and international policies related with the corporate led globalization, neoliberalism and militarism.

Mary Lou Malig said free trade is also avoiding solutions to the climate crisis.
