Guatemala Resists

In the first day of the Solidarity Mission organized by Friends of the Earth International and the Transnational Institute (TNI) of the Netherlands, which aims to reclaim the rights of affected communities resisting open pit metal mining in Guatemala and El Salvador, the delegation visited Marlin mine of Canadian corporation Goldcorp.

Despite being in operation for only five years, this open pit gold mine is the cause of a large number of victims, the privatization of water sources, the poisoning of the river through which it obtains the water for the gold extraction process (Cuilco), the displacement of peasants and indigenous people and the criminalization of those who decided to defend their territory.
