The international community has unanimously condemned the military coup in Honduras. Since Sunday, day set for the popular consultation, which turned out to be the day when hundreds of military officers kidnapped and deported Honduran President, Manuel Zelaya -and gave way to the de facto government led by head of congress, Roberto Micheletti- the most important international organizations have rejected the coup, and consider the new government is illegitimate.

The Organization of American States (OAS), the Central American Integration System, the Union of South American Nations, the Bolivarian Alternative for Latin America and the Caribbean (ALBA), Grupo de Río and the United Nations General Assembly, demanded the people responsible for the coup to stop their attempts to establish a forced government, and recognize Zelaya as the only president of Honduras.

The decisions taken by the international organizations include statements and measures to put pressure on the regime, such as the suspension of trade by land during 48 hours adopted by the CAIS countries, or to cut off diplomatic ties with Honduras as adopted by the ALBA states, until the democratic government is reestablished.

Earlier today, Zelaya was present in New York to request the UN General Assembly to support him in his return to Honduras and his office. Zelaya announced that he is planning to return to his country on Thursday, despite the threats by the military forces, who have stated that they will take him into custody if he returns.

Zelaya, with the support of all Latin American leaders, will be joined by an international delegation made up by President of UN General Assembly, Miguel D´Escoto, and OAS Secretary General, José Miguel Insulza.

Meanwhile, the streets of Honduran capital city, Tegucigalpa, continue being the scenario for peaceful protests carried out by thousands of Honduran people, demanding the return of the democratic government.

Latest reports state that the military forces have tried to violently break the barricades set up by the people around the Presidential Building with tear gases and shooting civilians.

“The military officers have repressed us with guns and tear gas, and there are several injured people from the popular movement. This has cleared the demonstrators. The brutal repression carried out by the Armed Forces of Honduras to us, demonstrators, has resulted in 75 injured people, 3 deaths and 30 arrest warrants”, reads a communiqué issued yesterday by Honduran peasant groups.

According to the statement, “The situation for the popular leaders is extremely difficult, since this coup is repressive and has no mercy on the people who reject it”. As well, they explained the repression of the communication media: the de facto government has intervened and blocked all radio and TV networks which criticized the coup, and has forced cable operators to remove international news networks.

Internet access is also difficult, due to the intermittent power cuts. In addition to censor the media, two private networks have been militarized, and their directors have escaped, for fear of being arrested by the regime.
