The voices of the people involved

The representative of the Environmental Committee of Cabañas Department in El Salvador, Francisco Pineda, coordinator of the Movement of Victims and People Affected by Climate Change and Corporations (MOVIAC) in that country, Jose Santos and CESTA-Friends of the Earth El Salvador´s Chair, Ricardo Navarro were the speakers on Saturday in an activity held in San Isidro municipality, Cabañas. The MOVIAC submitted the presidential candidate for the Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN), Salvador Sanchez Ceren, a political proposal that address es, among many other things, the banning of metal mining exploration and exploitation in the country.

The proposal also includes a demand for an investigation into the threats, attacks and murders against environmentalists in Cabañas. Sanchez Ceren, who will run against right wing presidential candidate for the ARENA Party (Alianza Republicana Nacionalista), Norman Quijano, committed to ban metal mining, because “it is necessary to defend life”.

MOVIAC´s proposal addresses several issues of the current situation at national level, most of them linked to the environmental challenges faced by El Salvador.
