Last Tuesday, the house of Domingo Hernandez Ixcoy was raided. He is a Guatemalan leader of the Maya- Waqib Kej Coordination and Convergence. He says the raid is part of a series of threats against social leaders in Guatemala.
The country has been hit by a new violent incident of intimidation against social leaders. In this case, Domingo Hernandez’s home was raided. The message left could be interpreted as a death threat against the leader.
After the raid, that took place while Domingo was going to the office of his organization, a handwritten paper was found with the following message: “leave the message on top of the corpse”.
Domingo is currently resting home by medical prescription as a result of an accident he suffered a couple of months ago. Therefore, the raid also implied the fact that the attackers knew his personal movements and it cannot be linked with a ’regular crime’.
It is estimated that the raiders thought Domingo would be at home at the moment they broke into. Since he was not there, they left the message causing alert among the Guatemalan social organizations that visited Domingo from different parts of the country.
Domingo told Real World Radio that there has been a “series of intimidations” against social leaders recently in Guatemala.
