In an interview with Colombian radio station La FM, Carlos Lopez, de facto Honduran foreign minister, acknowledged having met with President Alvaro Uribe.

This meeting took place on July 20th, after the negotiations mediated by Costa Rican President, Oscar Arias, failed due to the de facto government´s rejection to the return of the constitutional President Manuel Zelaya. Lopez said that President Uribe expressed “his affinity with president Roberto Micheletti´s government”.

The foreign minister also said he decided to go to Colombia because both countries are “victims of common aggressors, like (Venezuelan President) Hugo Chávez.” With reference to this, he said that Chávez “represents a threat for nations, for the independence of the countries”.

Despite the meeting between Uribe and the de facto foreign minister, the Colombian executive stated they continue supporting “the mediation carried out by President Arias in order to reinstate democracy in Honduras”.

However, this situation is extremely worrying for the region´s stability. On July 5th, the OAS decided to suspend Honduras membership and asked the member states to cut off all ties with Tegicigalpa until the legitimate president, Manuel Zelaya, is reinstated.

But with this meeting, held behind the backs of the international community, the Colombian government is also violating the UN General Assembly´s order of not recognizing any other Honduran government than that of Manuel Zelaya.
