Far away from the main hotels, the beach and the shopping malls, there is a different Cancun than that shown in tourism photos. It is in this “other city” where a community kitchen was established with the aim to give food to thousands of people who will participate in the activities parallel to the COP16 on climate change.
The community kitchen is located in Gregorio Sanchez village of the Peoples´ Urban Movement (MUP) where 1800 people have been living for over three and a half years.
In an interview with Real World Radio, two of the promoters of the initiative, Victor Hugo and Roberta, said that the community kitchen had been established to “support the people coming from far away, who don´t have enough money”, and that it will remain open even after the COP.
They also explained the meaning of the sign that can be read on the aprons of the cooks (“MUP Palas”), which is the name of the space where the organizations participating in the “Climate Dialogue” will meet.
“MUP Palas is the name of the space of the International Climate Justice Forum, where over 200 organizations are meeting to discuss and analyze the climate crisis we are suffering. The place chosen by the official authorities is a big hotel called Moon Palace. With reference to that name, in a symbolic way, we named it MUP Palas, which is the Urban Movement for the People (in Spanish)”, said Victor Hugo.
He also made reference to their demands to the COP, which are related to the right to the city, and ensuring a good living for all.
