Interview with Ricardo Canese, Paraguayan lawmaker of Frente Guasu

Paraguay is undergoing a time of high incertitude after House representatives passed an initative to impeach democratically elected president, Fernando Lugo.

Real World Radio interviewed Ricardo Canese, representative of Frente Guasu and member of PARLASUR, who questioned the action of the representatives who voted for the impeachment, no only because of the lack of merit, but also because of the urgency of the process that may mean that the Senate may oust the President in less than 24 hours.

The rationale provided by the congressmembers who voted for the impeachment is the shooting where nearly 20 people died in Canindeyu department. Canese believes the incident was probably perpetrated by hired assassins, which shows the tactics used to oust Lugo.

The member countries of the Union of South American Nations (Unasur) agreed to send a mission of Foreign Ministers to Paraguay to analyze the crises caused by the House’s decision. They agreed to act in the spirit of the bloc’s democratic clause in order to guarantee the respect of democracy and the rule of law in Paraguay.

Lugo sent a message to the country about the House’s decision and he did not rule out resigning to the presidency. He said he would submit to the impeachment promoted by Congress with all the consequences it implies.
