Honduran Lawmaker, Marvin Ponce, from the left-wing Unificación Democrática party, is “outraged” by the role taken by the de facto representative, Roberto Micheletti Bain, and fears that the “militarist wave” which emerged in his country will expand to the rest of Latin America.

“This has been a 30-year step back, and needs to be stopped immediately”, stated Ponce in an interview with Real World Radio.

The situation Honduras is experiencing seems taken out from the most tragic chapters of recent Latin American history: persecution of leaders, repression of popular demonstrations, arrest warrants on journalists and closing of communication media.

Yesterday resulted in 170 people injured and 300 arrested, while the de facto government is calling for a mobilization of state officers to validate the coup, stated Ponce. Another lawmaker from the same party, Cesar Ham, had to leave the country after receiving several death threats.

Despite information continues to be fragmented, Ponce stated that at least two Infantry Battalions decided not to comply with Micheletti´s commands. According to Ponce, the military groups against the coup would be the 4th Infantry Battalion from Atlantida department and the Special Forces Battalion. This same announcement has been made by peasant leader Rafael Alegria, from Via Campesina International, which can be heard in albatv.org.
