“We would like to make a small adding to the food sovereignty declaration, we should have a wood sovereignty too”, to take responsibility over rainforests, said Swedish farmer Torgny Ostling.

Ostling was interviewed by FOEI’s Economic Justice – Resisting Neoliberalism Program Coordinator, Lucia Ortiz, of Brazil, at an activity held on May18-20 in Gothenburg, Sweden. The event was organized by social movements from different parts of the country. One of the key issues addressed there was the United Nations conference on sustainable development, known as Rio+20, that will take place next month in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Ostling is a member of Via Campesina Sweden, a small organization that has worked hard against the "colonization" of forests and fields, according to Ostling. “We have the same problem, both in the North and South. (With) the profits from the forests here, they make investments in your country”, said Ostling, and set as an example the Swedish-Finnish forestry and cellulose company Stora Enso, present in Brazil. “We need to globalize the hope and the struggle”, concluded Ostling.
