The struggle against false solutions to climate change has ended up reflecting a dichotomy of models with the future of the planet at stake. The history of the environmental deterioration which is putting the Earth at risk is also the history of the concentration of wealth in the hands of a few. This is why the plans to avoid a complete disaster have to stem from social justice.

These are some of the points of view raised by the social organizations which participated in the first preliminary hearing of the International Climate Justice Tribunal held in Cochabamba, Bolivia, and which established moral sanctions to companies accused of environmental crimes and for their responsibility in global warming.

In this framework, Miguel Palacín Quispe, Head of the Andean Coordination of Indigenous Organizations stressed that the world crisis “has consequences and also culprits” and that they are involved with an extractivist development model which has caused “social destruction”.

“The planet is in an emergency, and we are on our way to a catastrophe. If we don´t stop today, the Earth will reach two degrees Celsius and there will be no way to survive. The Earth will make it, but we won´t, we, the cause of this global warming”, he warned.
