A Matter of Rights

Guidelines on the use and ownership of land and natural resources, according to the civil society

Mario Ahumada, Regional Coordinator of the International Planning Committee, highlighted that after almost two days of joint work among social movements and organizations it was made clear that policies related to food sovereignty cannot be “voluntary”, since it is a matter of rights.

The FAO will carry out a consultation on Thursday and Friday in Itamaraty with the civil society. Over 80 organizations, movements and NGOs will be represented in this consultation.

In an interview with Real World Radio, Ahumada said that the goal of this consultation is to involve many organizations. “Almost all Latin America and the Caribbean is being consulted”, said Ahumada.

Although it is clear that “social movements and organizations in Latin America and the Caribbean have been discussing and sharing proposals on land use and ownership for years, what´s new is that now we are trying to promote a joint proposal that goes beyond the issue of land”, Ahumada said.

“It is no longer an issue of possibilities to access land, it has become an issue of right to land. Our own guidelines that will be proposed to the FAO for Latin America and the world are not voluntary, they are a right, and that´s what we are going to promote here in Brasilia”, said the IPC coordinator.
