“Patriarchy, as a system of opression, causes unequal power relations between men and women”

Women from several countries, representing environmental groups member of Friends of the Earth Africa met on May in Kampala, capital of Uganda, to give continuity to their work in the region for the dismantling of patriarchy.

Rita Uwaka, of Environmental Rights Action – Friends of the Earth Nigeria, said to Real World Radio: the meeting “was an opportunity for us to understand the link between environmental justice and gender justice, and also how the different forms of oppression are affecting women”.

At the meeting, two women were chosen to be part of the Executive Committee of the region, the highest decision-making body: Anabela Lemos (Justiça Ambiental – Friends of the Earth Mozambique) and Nora Bowier (Sustainable Development Institute – Friends of the Earth Liberia). Rita referred to this decision as a historical one, both for Friends of the Earth Africa and the entire Friends of the Earth International (FoEI). The activist is the regional representative for Africa at the steering group of FoEI´s Forests and Biodiversity Program.
