Honduran organizations expect Lobo will not be legitimized at CELAC’s summit

The summit of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac), a community comprising 33 countries, will take place on December 3 and 4 in Caracas, Venezuela.

While Honduran social organizations warn about an escalade of the criminalization of protest, president Porfirio Lobo confirmed his participation at the Celac summit.

A few days ago, leaders Joaquín Mejía and Bertha Cáceres, who are renowned for their struggle against the coup d’état in Honduras, traveled to Ecuador to expose human rights violations in their country and also said the situation “has worsened” under Lobo’s administration.

“No human rights abuse has been punished, quite on the contrary, they have been rewarded”, said Mejia in a report made public by the show La Voz de los Movimientos.

The systematic crimes against humanity committed over the past years show that in Honduras “the institutions are completely failed and have been taken over by the coup perpetrators”.

Honduran organizations demand the Celac’s summit, and especially the progressive governments of Latin America, to not legitimize Lobo’s administration when defining funding possibilities.
