Lawyer Gita Parihar, of Friends of the Earth England, Whales and Northern Ireland, highlights that the UN negotiations on sustainable development taking place in Rio, Brazil, have taken a ’step forward’ to ensure public participation in these processes.

Parihar claims that the negotiated texts are very supportive of public participation, they even say that “you can’t have sustainable development without public participation”. There is now a mandate for the UNEP to look at this and potentially the high level political forum. “They will come up with standards so instead of having to have this debate every single time there will be hopefully one set of clear guidelines that organizations will understand, so it’s a small step forward in the right direction”.
