An Empowering Alliance

Interview with Gerardo Jumí of the Andean Coordination of Indigenous Organizations (CAOI)

Real World Radio interviewed Gerardo Jumi, the new head of the Andean Coordination of Indigenous Organizations (CAOI).

He said the creation of the Alliance for Food Sovereignty of the Peoples of Latin American and the Caribbean strengthens a common front of social organizations and networks of indigenous and peasant peoples, fisherfolk and women that improves their influence in spaces like the Committee on World Food Security.

He also talks about the importance of the alliance’s assembly as part of the peace efforts in his home country, Colombia, between the insurgents and the Government.
Food sovereignty is a principle of social movements both urban and rural, it is the legacy of indigenous and native peoples that unifies organizations and proposals to overcome the capitalist system, says Jumi.

“The peoples have reflected autonomously about these concepts and all this strengthens the unity of action” says Jumi about an alternative economic model based on the principles of being “sustainable, redistributive and solidary”.

He highlighted the importance of the Alliance’s charter as a “clear guideline” for the grassroots and in their dialogue with national governments and multilateral agencies.
