Lives at Risk: resistance to mining in South Africa

Below we share a video where community members resisting mining in South Africa explain the reasons behind their struggles, the threats they receive and the alternatives raised by them, such as sustainable agriculture.

These are Nonhle Mbuthuma and Lebogang Ngobeni, who were interviewed by Dino de Lemos of Justiça Ambiental (JA!) – Friends of the Earth Mozambique, in the framework of the Permanent Peoples Tribunal (PPT) of Southern African countries, held in Johannesburg, South Africa, on August 17-18.

The Tribunal was organized by the Southern Africa Campaign to Dismantle Corporate Power and allowed eight countries of the region to talk about the impacts caused by the pressure of transnational corporations.

Transnational and political power are trying, unsuccessfully, to intimidate Nonhle and Lebogang. Both have received death threats, but they continue denouncing the companies responsible for the projects they reject and the political actors who protect these companies.
