Environmental federation Friends of the Earth International (FoEI) has been working hard within the Coordinating group of the Peoples’ Summit to be held in parallel to the UN Summit on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in order to agree on common items in the social movements agenda.

Fernando Costa, member of Friends of the Earth Brazil spoke about this in interview with Real World Radio in Rio de Janeiro.

“The aim of this Summit is to transform resistance processes that are now fragmented in order to obtain greater agreement for future work. We believe Rio could be a turning point in terms of alliances”, said Fernando.

He also said the movements have witnessed the “promiscuous relations” of States and the United Nations with transnational corporations, which are responsible for profiting from the climate, economic, food and environmental crises, so denunciation and mobilization will play a key role in Rio+20 in June.

Friends of the Earth is promoting the idea of the Peoples’ Summit as a global phenomenon, since the side event will not only take place in Rio de Janeiro -where they expect the arrival of nearly 40,000 people- but also in the affected territories around the world, in parallel to the Rio events.

The social movements have said that the city represents a “metaphor” of the advance of capital over common goods and privatization of land since it will host the UN Summit, as well as the FIFA WorldCup in 2014 and the Olympic Games in 2016.
