Obedience instead of Knowledge

GRAIN Expert believes capitalism dislikes diversity

Ramon Vera, of GRAIN, gave one of the opening speeches at the Seminar on Climate Crisis,
Technological Threats and Methodologies for Resistance, which is taking place in San Jose, Costa Rica. The seminar was called by GRAIN, ETC Group and the Coordination Network on Biodiversity.

Vera referred to the need to look for alternatives to the “industrial system of education”, since most formal education systems “teach us obedience instead of knowledge”.

The researcher and editor of Biodiversidad y Cultura journal began his presentation by explaining how the vision of the industrialized world tries to be “homogenous for all cases. Capitalism, science and industry dislike diversity. They like homogeneity”.

The idea that every corner is a center is a different way of understanding the world, where “meaning is built among all”. He said this should not be patented. Knowledge is a common good built in a collective”.

Vera questioned the mechanisms used by the capitalist system to “sell knowledge and monopolize thought”.

Real World Radio’s correspondent in Costa Rica, Henry Picado, attended the opening event and made a report of the first part of this seminar being held from September 19 to 21.
