Outraged. This is how the people who oppose the coup in Honduras felt when the US government announced they will support the elections to be carried out in November in Honduras, even though these are held under the dictatorship led by Roberto Micheletti.

“The elections will be part of the reality and will return Honduras to a path towards democracy (…) It would be a huge historic mistake to deny this right”, said US Ambassador in Tegucigalpa, Hugo Llorens, according to EFE.

The position of the US is contrary to that of the rest of the international community, which sets as a condition to recognize the result of the elections that President Manuel Zelaya, ousted on June 28th, returns to being Head of State.

Meanwhile, the Front of Resistance Against the Coup d´Etat, called to boycott the electoral process even though Zelaya is reinstated, as they consider that although Zelaya returns to office, it is too late to avoid fraud.

On Sunday, Carlos Reyes, independent left wing candidate, and also a leader of the bloc, stated to Channel 3 of Honduras that he will leave the run for presidency. Reyes based his decision on the fact that he didn´t wan t to legitimate the coup that had put an end to democracy in his country last June.

Also, the Inter American Press Association (IAPA) stated that there was a sad deterioration of the freedom of speech in Honduras.

“The repression against the media has been evident after June 28th, especially against independent media which defend democracy” states a report written by Edgardo Dumas Rodriguez, regional Vice-President of IAPA in Honduras, submitted to the assembly of the organization in Buenos Aires.
