In Guatemala, people hired by Cementos Progreso and Swiss transnational company Holcim entered Los Pajoques field to intimidate the population. There, they beat one of the community leaders, who had received death threats on several occasions.

This took place in one of the communities of San Juan Sacatepequez, which is strongly opposing extractive activities. The attack on September 24th was denounced by Ceiba-Guatemala, member of environmentalist federation Friends of the Earth International (FoEI).

“This event is part of the systematic threats and attacks against the communities caused by the will of cement companies to establish in the Maya Kakchikel communities”, reads a press statement by the organization.

Ten days ago, a FoEI delegation visited San Juan Sacatepequez , a place known as the “land of flowers”, to confirm the abuses against indigenous communities. This happened a few days before the attack to Los Pajoques.

The environmental activists demand Guatemalan authorities to protect and respect the lives of the communities and their leaders who are threatened. They also demand the cement company to end the attacks against the local population.

“Peace for the 12 communities in San Juan Sacatepequez”. This is the final message of the letter issued by FoEI. The federation has plans to start a global campaign to denounce the abuses of Holcim, a company responsible for devastation in many parts of the world.
