“If they play with one, they play with all”. This is one of the themes of the recently created National Network of Civilian Resistance to High Rates of Electricity, formed on Sunday in San Cristobal de las Casas, in the Mexican state of Chiapas.

The network was created with the goal of confronting the “bad government” and the big energy companies which aim at appropriating the collective resources. Twenty organizations from Campeche, Chiapas, Chihuahua, the Federal District, Guerrero, Oaxaca and Veracruz participated in their first activity.

The policies implemented by the Federal Commission of Electricity (CFE) have been in the public eye for many months, and the commission has been severely criticized by the social organizations.

The groups who are driving the initiative aim at strengthening the resistance against the high rates of electric power, the struggle for the fulfillment of the San Andres agreements, and against the privatization of electric power.

“We claim that electric power belongs to the people”, they state in the document.

One of the recent conflicts analyzed by the organizations which make up the network took place in Amatenango del Valle municipality, Chiapas. According to them, the consolidation of a local resistance movement against the abuses of rates caused strong retaliation by the authorities, including officials of the CFE.

In addition of the fact that 52 communities were affected by the blackouts, there were death threats against some of the most visible faces of the movement, they stated.

Far from letting their guard down, the activists are willing to double their efforts and denounce the national and international abuses.

“We would like to remind the big transnational corporations and their accomplices in the government that they are up against an aware people which is prepared to what´s coming now and in 2010, a year full of meaning for Mexico. We say again: No More, the crimes against the people and the resources of this country will not be left unpunished”, they conclude in the document where they introduced the network.
