The association of Uruguayan small-scale rural producers has gone through high and low times, at the mercy of different official policies and the dominant economic models of the country.

In the 90s, the strong network of grassroots peasant organizations was hardly hit by the official lack of interest and by the indiscriminate openness to markets.

In the past five years, however, the organization of small-scale producers had an unusual boost, and the signs of the recovery of the associative spirit are beginning to appear. This is the old community spirit of the inhabitants of the countryside, although with new features, such as the strong role of women in key places of these organizations.

A few days ago, in San Antonio, Canelones department, the first “Horticulture Expo of Family Production” was carried out. The local gym was invaded by food which was proudly displayed by their producers, in one of the areas with the best agricultural soil of Uruguay.

Despite sophisticated machinery which is being used in the area was also shown, the main element of the day was a plough, since animal draught is one of the main traction forces, especially oxen.

Producers attended several conferences, such as the program of recovery of local varieties of carrot and pumpkin as an alternative to imported varieties.
