Early this month, British channel 4 screened a documentary titled “What the Green Movement Got Wrong”. The documentary shows nuclear energy and GM crops as great solutions to climate change and it was a direct attack against Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace.

“A group of environmentalists across the world believe that, in order to save the planet, humanity must embrace the very science and technology they once so stridently opposed.”, says Channel 4 in the documentary, which announces how these environmentalists, who are against the positions of the aforementioned environmental groups, propose GMOs and nuclear energy as solutions to climate change.

Real World Radio interviewed Kirtana Chandrasekaran, food sovereignty campaigner of Friends of the Earth International and member of Friends of the Earth England, Wales and Northern Ireland. She said that the documentary did not show facts but the same arguments expressed by the advocates of genetic engineering and nuclear energy, that is to say based on myths instead of facts.

“We do not need GM crops to feed the world”, said Kirtana. Contrary to what the documentary claims – which portrays the environmental movement as opposed to progress and the advance of technology- GM crops are the ones that are behind in the scientific development.

The activist also wondered what would be done about the radioactive waste generated by nuclear power and its potential accidents.

She also wondered if generating nuclear power in a centralized way was the most suitable thing for countries like India or countries in Africa, which would require decentralized energy sources based on energy sovereignty.

She concluded saying: “We don’t need these ’solutions’ because we have really effective alternatives”.
